Raceway Park PEI
Oct 7/8 report
By Earl Proude
Kandy is Dandy at Turkey Trots
Kandy Mitton of Sussex, New Brunswick drove her 1984 Chevy powered Ford Mustang to victory in the top division at the Turkey Trot Nationals held at Raceway Park on the weekend.
Mitton who usually competes in the Pro Bracket class had to defeat five Super Pro cars in six rounds of racing to earn the top eliminator honor. Among those to taste defeat at her hands were Albert VanWiechen, Tim Lawrence, Frank Banks, John MacKinnon and Rick Nowlan, all formidable competitors. Wedged in there, in the fourth round, was the number one qualifier in the class, Jason Dix, also from Sussex in his 1923 Chevy powered T-Bucket. Quite a day for Miss Kandy!
Dennis Murray's 1977 Trans Am from Moncton mowed down the competition in the slower division of the Turkey Trot bracket bash. Murray defeated Janet Axworthy of Oyster Bed Bridge in her 1995 Chevrolet Caprice in the final, after getting by another Moncton racer, Lynn Cormier, in the semi-final. Thirty-nine cars competed in the class.
|
Thirty-five cars, bikes and sleds entered the Duck Race for first round losers. In the final Mike MacDonald of Oyster Bed Bridge lit the red light to hand Montague's Albert VanWiechen the win. With the red light MacDonald ended an impressive string of consistent times and fine lights. Charles Coughlin of Wellington Center, PEI was MacDonald's last victim and finished third in the division.
The Junior Dragsters were not to be out done; they had a Top Eliminator as well as a Duck Race winner. Mary Elizabeth Roach worked her way through the seventeen car field to meet and defeat Charlottetown's Mike Weir in the final. Hunter River's Matt MacLean finished third.
In the Duck division of the Junior Dragsters, Daniel Toombs of Mayfield, PEI defeated Summerside's Kevin Gallant in the final round.
On Saturday 75 cars entered a huge Gamblers' race which saw six rounds of competition before Hunter River's Brian Toombs defeated Albert VanWiechen in the seventh and final round
Of course a Duck Race also had to be held and that saw Jeff Wilson of Moncton drive his 1975 Chevy Monza to victory in the final with a win over Hunter River's Glenn MacLean.
Saturday's Junior Dragster winner was Cornwall, PEI's Craig Campbell who defeated Mike weir on his Junior drag bike in the final..
This ends the drag race season at Raceway Park. The management would like to thank all of the racers, fans and sponsors who supported the track this year and look forward to welcoming everyone back in May of 2007 for the annual May Run.

There were more than 100 vehicles passed through tech on Friday night. Time trials were offered to all from 5:00PM until dark.
Saturday began OK, we were able to get the box class qualified but 1/2 way
through the field of 131 No Box cars it began to rain. Not exactly sure as
it is all a blur now but I believe it was around 2: 00 PM. Sadly the race day was finished but there were not many sad faces as most people found other things to keep themselves amused.
All racers in the No Box game received a refund and the Box people got
double their money back. 20 No Box racers did not pick up their payout so I
guess it will be considered a donation to the track..thanks..... The Bike
bash entries unanimously agreed to leave their funds there to be added to
Sundays purse.
The vehicle count at the end of Saturday was 238. That is the largest field
that Greenfield has ever had. I always wondered how many vehicles we could
park and handle and now we know. We could have made room for a few more but
the parking real estate was reasonably well used up. It would be a bugger to
cut the grass between them if you know what I mean.
When the lights came on Sunday morning it was apparent that it was still a
tad damp. If began to dry then in came the fog. It all passed and we were
burning rubber by 10:30.
Because of the late beginning, the weather calling for rain by 3-3:30PM, and
the high car count, rather than suicide, it was decided that if we were to
get er done we would need to forgo the formalities of time trials. Other
than giving the people that just arrived Sunday morning a time trial, we
went directly to first round, random pairing, eliminations.
There were the standard few broken axles, major antifreeze spill, smashed
oil pans. We even had a not so standard issue where a car that went wild at
the start line twice over the weekend with an apparent stuck throttle, the
first time causing little damage but the second time it wiped out a cable,
the timing box and sensor at the 60 foot. They are nothing but junk now.
Repairs were completed by using the 660 MPH sensor and cable.

ADRA Points finals Report
After all that we were able to finish up all classes by approx 5:00PM, with
the fog returning. The final pass was the last pass were were willing to put
down the track as it was getting greasy.
The pavement was wet 10 minutes later. Perfect timing, could not have been
planned better...........right.
Don't have a count but even with the weather the spectator croud was
unbelievable. Probably equal to or exceeding any other race this year.
The engine raffle was concluded with the Bridgewater Engine Center engine being won by Tom Caldwell of Moncton.....lucky devil.........

Raceway Park PEI
Sept 2-3 report
By Earl Proude
This Labour Day Weekend at Raceway Park drag strip was the most interesting and busiest in the last 25 years.
It was interesting because of the new-format King of the Hill points race instituted by the track this year. At the end of the regular Sunday racing, the sixteen most successful cars from all classes were grouped together and forced to fight it out for the big prize money.
After a four car elimination to break a tie for sixteenth spot, there were six Super Pro cars, six Pro cars, two Snowmobiles, and two Street Bracket cars.
When the field was narrowed to four after two rounds of racing, Jason McNeill, John MacKinnon, and Ray Roach represented the Super Pro class and only Henk Niesten from the Street class. McNeill defeated Niesten and MacKinnon trailered Roach in the semifinals.
In the final Charlottetown's John MacKinnon ran a 9.20 on a 9.17 dial-in
coupled with a .520 reaction time to force McNeill, from Sydney, Nova Scotia, to break out in attempting to catch him.
The weekend was busy because of the number of races that were run and the fact that there were over a hundred and fifteen racers. On Saturday there two Gamblers races, an elimination for the Junior Dragsters, and a Duck Race for all the first round losers. On Sunday there were eliminations in Super Pro, Pro Bracket, Bike/Sled, Street Bracket, and Junior Dragsters before the four rounds of the points bash. If that wasn't enough, at the request of the racers 31 cars entered another Gamblers race which was intermingled with the points finale.
The next race at the park will be the Turkey Trot Nationals held on Thanksgiving weekend. Meanwhile the Tuesday night street drags will continue for the month of September.

Friday evening was fantastic with 80+ vehicles taking advantage of time
trials until dark. Saturday was another gorgeous day, temperatures in the mid 20's. A thousand time trials then on to the "Bracket Bash". The following was the result of that deal:
Box Class
1. Peter Carpenter 1198
2. Daryl Bishop 63
3. Bernie Corscadden 1331
No Box Class
1. Ray Ingram 412
2. Warren Cottreau 2054
3. Vaughn Boone 3960
On to the King of the Hill. We actually had 2 for a minute, that is, we ran
Peter and Ray for that honor. Ray took the win light and it was announced
that Ray was the King but hawk eye here happened to be in the tower watching
the run and it seemed odd. Upon looking closely at the computer it was
discovered that we had forgotten to select the button that makes breakouts
count. Oops
..Ray had broken out by 3 or 4 hundreds and Peter had not. Ray
was stripped of his crown and it was then given to it's rightful owner, Peter. Congrats to Peter, wear the crown proudly till next year when there
will be many trying to take it away. Ray took it well, after all he had already won some $1700.00 + in the Bash and he wasn't done with us
yet...........read on. The total payout for the Bash was some $ 4500.00

Greenfield Dragway Aug 19-20
Report By Mitch Bonnar
Sunday morning looked grim, the weather radar looked worse. Rain was imminent. It was decided to start at 9:00AM with their dialin's on. First pass was to be the qualifying run. That's always popular on race day but it
was deemed necessary if we were to have a chance to get her done. To make a long story short, we had no lunch break and only one breakdown, which thanks to our volunteers, was taken care of in minutes and we did get her done by 3:00 PM with the exception of, would you believe, the very last run for 1st and 2nd in Super Pro. That was split evenly between the two and
both were happy. They even flipped a coin for the 1st and 2nd place trophy

Raceway Park PEI
August 12-13 report
By Earl Proude
At the Atlantic Drag Racing Association event at Raceway Park on the weekend , Greg Gillis of Margaree Harbour was simply unstoppable. Gillis drove his 1973 Dodge Challenger down the drag strip to eleven straight victories on Saturday and Sunday. He started with the Regular Gamblers' Race on Saturday and finished Sunday afternoon by winning the highly competitive Pro Bracket Class. This streak vaulted Gillis into a sixth place tie in the exciting new "Overall Points Series" at the park. Chad Ramsay of Wellington, PEI was in the Gamblers' Race final with Gillis and Hunter River's Glen MacLean fell victim to his success in the Pro Bracket final.
In the Super Pro Division, Dave MacKinnon of New Perth, PEI was not the whole story Sunday, but he sure seemed like it at the end of the day. He was the number one qualifier in the class, took home the ADRA prize for having the best reaction time in eliminations, and won the class with a final round win over close friend Mario VanWiechen. To get to the finals, Mackinnon had ousted Albert VanWiechen and Mario had defeated Roy Matthews.
Summerside's Dave Wooldridge drove his Polaris snowmobile to victory in the Bike Sled Class on Sunday edging fellow snowmobiler Glen Frizzell on his number 12 Arctic Cat. Steve O'Handley from Guysborough, NS finished third in the class. Frizzell may have lost the final, but he gained enough points to move into sole possession of first place in the points race. Meanwhile, Wooldridge sits in second tied with Super Pro driver John MacKinnon from Charlottetown.
Beudah VanWiechen continued to show her dominance of the Street Bracket Class by working her way through the 22 car field and defeating Janet Axworthy of Oyster Bed Bridge in the final.
This win gives her 12 points and leaves her tied for fourth place with Pro Bracket's Chad Ramsay. Carl Leeman was third in the class.
The final of the Quick Gamblers' Race was captured by Charlottetown's Dave Constable when he defeated Jason MacNeil from Sydney, NS.
|
Seventeen Junior Dragsters participated in their division on the weekend. Saturday's elimination saw Sarah Forbes defeat Kensington's Morgan Bell in the final. On Sunday Summerside's Jordan Poirier was the victor when he edged Moncton's Jason Freeman in the final.
Next weekend the park hosts an "All Bike/Sled Extravaganza", with a Harley division, an Off-Road class, and of course the regular drag racing motorcycles and snowmobiles of all descriptions.
Then on Labor Day Weekend comes the exciting points finale. All points accumulated in the Gamblers' races as well as Sunday's eliminations will be added onto drivers' totals at the end of the day and then the fun will start. The top 16 point getters for the season will go into a $5000. shootout with all sixteen getting a share of the money.
Below are listed the points leaders to date. Of course not everyone is included because 106 drivers have so far earned points and are still mathematically in the running to make the shootout. After all, Greg Gillis did earn 11 points on the weekend

August 5-6 report
By Dave Anthony
Another weekend off our schedule and RAIN played a factor again. Saturday was pretty much a wash out but we did get the track open in the evening for a couple of hours of test and tune.
Fortunately Sunday started out SUNNY and stayed that way except for a few sun showers (just had to sprinkle to keep us worried!!). Decent turnout for the annual Street Car Shootout and the performance was outstanding.

Saturday report
It rained most of the day but dried up long enough to get a gamblers race in. That was won by Alan Cantwell over John MacKinnon in the near-dark. Blain Marsh took a WILD ride in his blown alcohol Olds Calais but didn't damage anything but one wheelie wheel when his throttle hung open. If it had happened anywhere else but that huge runway the car would have been destroyed.

Sunday Report
Sunshine and a large spectator count finally came to Cape Breton Dragway after two somewhat damp days. Time trials started at 8:30 sharp and continued till noon at a rapid pace with no downtime other than a couple of minutes here and there. Eliminations went quickly as well with one pair of cars crossing the finish line just as the next pair started their burnouts. The whole event was in the books by 5:30PM, we packed it all up and put it away and actually got home before dark. Allison Cann won the draw on a radio controlled Hummer model donated by Sheldon Nathenson with a portion of proceeds to the IWK.
Congratulations to all the winners - stay tuned for an announcement on Wednesday night
Test and Tune sessions coming soon.

Weather once again wrecked havoc with our scheduled racing this weekend. We did manage on Saturday to get in a gamblers race. We started 1st round around 4pm and ran the final around 7:15.
Sunday was a complete washout.
Our next scheduled weekend is August 5th and 6th when in addition to our regular racing we will be hosting the Annual NSMA Street Car Shootout.
We will try one more time to run the 1st Annual Diesel Truck race and the Sport Compact Shootout on the weekend of August 19/20. Hopefully third time is lucky!

The First Maritime Stock/Super Stock Tour 2006 race was held over the weekend , but with the weather forecasting rain there were only six S/SS racers.

Saturday, HOT, SUNNY and VERY HOT. Track temp mid afternoon 120F. We had 2 major engine failures one a BBF and the other a BBC. Thanks to the alertness of both drivers there was minimal cleanup required. Bad news is we lost two of our more dedicated racers and our counts are low enough now. Oh and we had one cycle engine give up it's life as well!
Great to see two racers from NS make the trip over Philip Donaldson in the Rambler and Dale Semple on his sled.

July 8-9 report
By Dave Anthony
After 6 rounds of gamblers it was Gerard Ronayne in his Nova with the win over Dave Anthony in the dragster. Winning Margin .002! 3rd place went to Derek Martin in his Mustang.
And then there was SUNDAY. Started out great same weather as Saturday except HOTTER but VERY VERY WINDY. Fortunately it was in a down track direction. Time trials went great in the morning and after lunch we were just getting ready when we noticed the TREE on the ground and 1/2 of the bulbs broken. Long and the short we blew a circuit board in the tree and racing was over for the weekend. Looks like if we could have combined our weather with Greenfields timing system it would have been a great day!!
Next racing in 2 weeks!! Tree is off to the States this morning for repairs!!

Friday night time trials were had from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. Approx. 65 vehicles
went through tech before dark. The temperature was 84 degrees at 8:00PM.
Saturday was the advertised 9 AM sharp start. a beautiful day of 85 or so
degrees.......
There were just a couple of oil downs. One on Friday evening from a broken
transmission oil cooler line leaving a trail about 2000 feet long but mostly
in the return lane.
The second on Saturday was a disaster, that is, I believe the 29 quart engine oil pan, the 38 quart transmission along with the 45 gallons of antifreeze as well as numerous pieces of orange cast iron from one unlucky racers car all ended up from the 1320 to about the 1800 foot mark.
Thanks to about 15 volunteers, lots of floor dry and broom pushing, it got
completed in about an hour.

Report By Mitch Bonnar
A standard gamblers race was held and the winners were:
1st - 390 - Vaughn Boone
2nd - 288 - Jody noble
3rd - 455 - Stephen Caldwell
Sunday started out a bit cooler and overcast. Time trials started at 9:00AM Sharp as usual.
Everything went great until it started to rain 1/2 way through the first time trial.
How the H#$L can it rain with a forecast like we had is beyond belief but it did and it did some more. We called the race at 12:00PM.....................
and I don't want to talk about it
....................rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....
That's racing, we have been very lucky so we should not complain too much. There are other tracks that have had it much worse recently.
All racers that arrived for Sunday only were offered a Cash Refund and all racers that purchased Weekend passes were given a Rain Check valid only for the next race in the amount of 50% of the car and driver entry fee paid for their class. A full weekend pass must be purchased to receive the aforementioned credit. We have the list of entrants by the tech cards andwill be used to determine who was there.
See you all at the next BIG ONE.

We'll we have 2 weekends now under our belt and have had to fight the weather both times. On the June 10/11 weekend we got in both days but this weekend just past we only got in Sunday and did not open the track until 12:45. The uncertain weather has played havoc with our car counts, which have been very low for both weekends. As a result we grouped everyone together and ran one class but points will be separated between the classes. The big new this year is the $2,000 top driver awards that will be go to the drivers with the best overall round win percentage. Right now Doug Strickland is batting 1.000 a perfect average!!

For an ADRA event it was an absolutely beautiful weekend both weather-wise and turnout.
Friday night time trials were had from 6 to 9 PM. Approx. 100 or so vehicles
went through tech before dark. Thanks to Sam and the crew they all got done.
Saturday was the advertised 9 AM sharp start. 85 degrees, a not so power
making 2000 foot of air and a just a few black flies...........
There were just a couple of breakdowns. Our sympathy goes out to Dave
Anthony of NFLD who made the long journey to play with us and unfortunately punched a rod through the side of his new 10 pass motor in his dragster. Boo King and the Nuclear Banana made a few test passes to the crowds pleasure.
The Box, No Box race went without a hitch with over $ 3000.00 in winnings
being passed out including $ 500.00 added to the pot by the NSDRA.
The Winners were:
NO BOX
1st 1992 Peter Hobart $ 1380.00
2nd SP135A Tony Garvin $ 400.00
3rd 641 Chad Ramsay $ 200.00
BOX
1st 1623 Jason MacNeil $ 735.00
2nd 166A Michael Comeau $ 235.00
3rd 1198 Peter Carpenter $ 110.00

Greenfield Dragway June 17-18
Report By Mitch Bonnar
Sunday was another Scorcher and went without a hitch. Boo's Banana seems to have gotten a bruise and developed a loss of oil pressure. We hope it is not too serious. Thanks for coming Boo !!
Eliminations started at 1:30 PM and went well until the 4th round when the computer ladder program took a dump and declared 2 opponents both winners in the S/M class ......you can imagine what the next ladder looked like when it was printed. After trying in vain to fix it we resorted to the old fashioned way and finished up around 6:30 PM.
All in all it was a great weekend and we want to thank the ADRA for allowing us to host the event, the sponsors, 20+volunteers, 200+racers and 1000+fans that made it such a successful event. We hope everyone had a blast like we did.

Wow, that was fun...........What a weekend at Greenfield.
Time Trials began at 6:45 PM Friday, not bad for all new cables and the fancy sensors that were added over the winter thanks to Doug Decker. Hook was predictably horrid Friday night.
It rained hard Friday night but by Sat morning things were ready to
race by 10:30 AM or so, however we must have been whacked with lightning discharges because the right lane had issues. We worked on the gear until 2:30PM then reluctantly called it a day when we finally admitted it was the ProBox that was the last issue and we could not resolve it. We refunded Saturday only racers and fans as we could give them nothing of a show.
A call for help was made to Cape Breton and we were blessed with a
replacement box which Gary Pozzebon even delivered 1/2 way to Liverpool just to speed up the repair. Thank you so much. Without them we were out of business.

Greenfield Dragway May 27-28
Report By Mitch Bonnar
The required box arrived well after dark, was installed, tested and retested then and there. It was perfect .....we were back in business.Sunday was beautiful all day long, sun, sun, sun, 26 degrees C.
The winter layover must soften parts which led to a couple oil downs early on. The rest of the day was perfect and went as smooth as silk. The hook came around to be quite decent early Sat morning and stayed all day. Everything went perfect as could be, not even 1 rerun was required...lol...and we were done by 5:30 PM I do not have an accurate count but there were 120 + registered vehicles and in excess of 1000 spectators in attendance. Super turnout
for the first early season race with rain in the forecast.
We want to thank all the spectators, sponsors, volunteers and the
racers for showing up. We hope we met everyones expectations.
